Capuchin Monastery, 1579
Rue du Marché des Capucins, 13001 MarseilleThe church was consecrated in 1616. Too small, another replaced it in 1694. The Capuchins were to form the largest religious community of men in Marseille. At the end of the 1791th century, their monastery, which included a cloth factory, a pharmacy, a botanical garden, a natural history collection and a cabinet of medals, extended to the current rue du Musée and de l'Académie. with entrance at the corner of rue Longue-des-Capucins. In XNUMX, the convent was declared national property, the monks were expelled, the buildings and land allocated and sold. Of their presence, only the names of the Capucins market and the rue Longue-des-Capucins remain.
The Capuchin Friars Minor form one of the three male branches of the first religious order of the Franciscan family, approved as a religious institute of pontifical right in 1528 by Pope Clement VII.
Many brothers, almost all from the branch of the Observance and separated from that of the Conventuals, then joined this new order. They are so named from the capuce or hood with which they cover their head. The Capuchins today number 10, spread across the world. On the former site of the Capuchin Monastery in Marseille we find the Noailles station, located at the top of rue du Marché des Capucins.
It was originally a hall built in 1837. It was converted in 1887 into what is now called " the old Labor Exchange » since the opening in 1936 of the new Labor Exchange from Marseille boulevard Charles Nédélec. It now houses the premises of the departmental union Force Ouvrière.
